A beautiful and successful regional initiative is gaining more and more recognition at the international level year after year. It is a county project for the certification of eco-friendly accommodation Eco Domus. Namely, after entering the TOP 100 global stories of good practice on sustainability last year, the County of Istria with that project was nominated for the Green Destination Story Awards in the Business & Marketing category this year.
The decision on the winner will be announced at the beginning of March at the largest tourism fair ITB in Berlin, and everyone who wants to vote can vote on the organizer’s website until January 23rd. It is the organization Green Destinations, which was founded in 2014 with the aim of providing a platform for certification and promotion of “green” tourist destinations at the world level.
To this day, it is recognized as one of the leading organizations in promoting sustainability in tourism, and under “green” destinations the organization considers tourist destinations that have achieved a high level of sustainability according to about 80 criteria of the Global Council for Sustainable Tourism, which approved the awarding of the “Green Destination Standard” certificate ” for the promotion of sustainable policies and sustainable management of destinations.
The Eco Domus program, or eco-friendly accommodation, was launched by the County Administrative Department for Tourism in 2017, and it encouraged diversification and raising the quality of private accommodation through alignment with the principles of sustainable development and sustainable tourism. The basic characteristics of Eco Domus accommodation are social and ecological responsibility, comprehensive protection of the environment and health, use of eco-certified washing and cleaning products, use of eco-certified toilet products, use of natural materials, water conservation, energy conservation, waste sorting and recycling.
